Yes, I told the world (including my boss) that I owe the man $10,000.

But it was for a higher purpose. Also, my original title was a Shot in the Arm is a Shot in the Dark, but I think the brilliant editors at the LA Times made the right choice in changing it.

But for anyone interested in where I got the information from, Demos put out a great report along with the Center for American Progress called the Economic State of Young America (link is to the PDF). In short? We’re screwed. And the fact you feel super broke isn’t just bad money management, is a generation-wide epidemic. And I won’t go off on a rant about how this is only going to get worse because we’re living in a country with an outdated economy that can’t compete in the international world market, or how if we’d actually put more money into social services and a safety net, and less into corporate incentives, then people might actually help boost the economy because they wouldn’t be so anxious worrying about health care and food and stuff. No, instead I’m going to send you to the equally great column out by Bob Herbert yesterday (we used the same report!). Because really, what you need right now is to be even more depressed about the state of your bank account…
